Many major libraries classify ALL of their resources (or all of their modern colls, at least) precisely because this provides one of the best ways of pulling together into one sequence material that is physically accessible to users and material that isn't. Some extend this to online resources too, for the same reason.Hugh Taylorhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17801986113143054571noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3814306046993354716.post-25599461535668280752010-07-18T22:11:35.345+01:002010-07-18T22:11:35.345+01:00Thanks Emma! Especially as it's true, libraries (potentially) already hold so much useful information to allow them to provide context for searches.

I do worry about the issue of what you call "second-guessing" though, not so much getting it wrong but more limiting what people find. Sometimes context can be too restrictive or omit things that actually might be of use/interest. So there also needs to be the option to turn context off in some way. Perhaps less an issue for undergraduates, but definitely once we're talking about research. Otherwise there's a risk of creating closed off categories that only point within themselves and do not create links or connections to things outside. Often the most interesting ideas come from combining things that live in different defined "subject" areas (faculties, classification numbers, undergraduate courses, however you define it).

CelineAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3814306046993354716.post-78319304672821356192010-07-08T09:16:49.510+01:002010-07-08T09:16:49.510+01:00Not only that - you also come before him in the li...Not only that - you also come before him in the list!Huwhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04131103052135978643noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3814306046993354716.post-65379788029413133392010-07-07T23:31:39.367+01:002010-07-07T23:31:39.367+01:00Probably the only time I'll appear in a list w...Probably the only time I'll appear in a list with Wittgenstein ;-)Lorcan Dempseyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06397088087991889879noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3814306046993354716.post-42452751087461999602010-07-07T17:45:06.828+01:002010-07-07T17:45:06.828+01:00Yes, indeed! The notable example is the Harvard Business Review, which does not allow direct links to be provided to articles from 'learning environments' without additional payment - see http://dltj.org/article/ebsco-hbp/ for some more details. When combined with the exclusivity aspect (I believe that EBSCO offer the only route for libraries to subscribe to HBR online) this is even more worrying.Owenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15363304748950192248noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3814306046993354716.post-29585472454628304322010-04-07T14:46:40.291+01:002010-04-07T14:46:40.291+01:00Lovely having you here, good luck in the Garden!Lovely having you here, good luck in the Garden!Huwhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04131103052135978643noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3814306046993354716.post-16274836887538893882010-03-22T10:17:35.070+00:002010-03-22T10:17:35.070+00:00Esther, have you seen Mendelay?
